PLEASURE LUXURY UTOPIA DESTINY and Indications of Approximate Reality
Essay
Pleasure is being alive.
Luxury is being old.
In the frightfully poignant words of a middle-aged and objectionable Camus, the solution to escaping absurdity is to “die at the right time.” When speaking of Utopia(s) (when contemplating nothing in nowhere) its vibrancy is most vital, most dramatic and moving when it remains imaginary. Fantasies have a shelf life determined by the intelligible flexibility of the individual: too tense and the fantastic volume is depleted, oozing through the fingers. But loose and it slips away smoothly, perfectly disappearing without a trace. Utopia(s) are most vital when they remain imaginary. The struggle to sustain Utopia is pure violence against nature (Botox Viagra Rogaine). Stasis is the root of senility. Fluxus is the bed of maturity.
Luxury is an indulgence of pleasure. Utopia is an indulgence of perception as is Reality or Truth or God or Love or Time or Space. What is a perceptual indulgence? Simply, it is a declaration (I think therefore I am) (thinking). The notion of declaration is a measured albeit modest form of domination (I Love You) propelled on a trajectory from one party to another - the trapper and the trapped. Declaration is how perceptual indulgence comes into being. Indulgence is the occupation of the short sighted, short fingered, short attention-spanned hobgoblins of the world. Obviously this subject needs little elaboration: to want something, to let desire spawn in your heart, is to be owned by that thing. What is the alternative? Perceptual anorexia? Perhaps we should skirt the issue altogether and introduce perceptual autism as a distraction. Total, Masterful Indifference. With perceptual autism nothing is lost, nothing is gained. All intellectual contingencies remain intact. Not to imply this as a solution; Pacifism is pathology when brain power is at stake.
Whether indulgent, anorexic or autistic, the question isn’t if a perception is authentic or inauthentic (because extravagances are issues of quantity, not quality). Quality is a subject bound to drive logical minds to madness. The concern is not the authenticity but the sustainability of intelligible truth(s). Intelligible, subterraneous, if not alternative truth(s) (that maturity is instability) (that reality is “legitimate only in precisely so far as [it is] approximate).
i forget exactly what it was that got me thinking about love this week but i was trying to define it. one of the conclusions i came to was that love was ownership, knowing that something or someone is “yours”. so i just wanted to share that little coincidence.
